Resources: And this is what I do - Mark Abbott, youth volunteeringco-ordinator, Citizens Advice

WHAT DOES YOUR WORK INVOLVE?

I manage our Millennium Volunteers project and I'm also project managing the start-up of our full-time volunteering project, funded by v. It will create 48 full-time opportunities for young people, targeting hard-to-reach and black and minority ethnic groups.

We also have a part-time volunteering project funded by v, which will create 350 part-time volunteering opportunities. Another part of my role is to co-ordinate our youth forum. And I take a lead in promoting the Citizens Advice service to young people for both volunteering and advice needs.

WHY IS YOUR WORK IMPORTANT?

Volunteering at a Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)is a great way for young people to get work experience and build up both their skills and confidence.

Historically, the image of a CAB volunteer is someone who is retired and has lots of spare time. It takes time to train as a CAB adviser, but there are a lot of other roles for young people.

WHAT'S THE MOST FULFILING ASPECT?

Knowing that the work we're doing has a positive effect on the lives of individuals.

By creating, developing and promoting these opportunities for young people, you do feel like you're genuinely making a difference and helping people develop in whatever way they need.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO DEVELOP THE ROLE?

This year, I'll be working with our youth forum to develop projects for young volunteers. I'm also very interested in virtual volunteering opportunities that remove barriers such as travel and office space, as you can volunteer from anywhere with the internet.
