Rent hike claims to be examined

The London Mayor's office has pledged to investigate claims that efforts to provide affordable childcare in the capital are being undermined by councils imposing massive rent increases.

Speaking at last week's Childcare Futures conference, organised by the Daycare Trust, deputy mayor Richard Barnes said: "The Greater London Authority will be sitting down with London Development Agency and London Councils very soon so we can map demand, provision, need and rental costs to get the true picture of what is happening across London".

Shireen Ritchie, deputy chair of London Councils' children and young people forum, said: "Perhaps we can persuade people to be more lenient with rent and rates. It would be useful for the government to undertake an analysis of costs."
