Prostitution: Youth work could be key to help Government tackle prostitution

A Home Office consultation document launched last week, called Paying the Price, suggests giving Connexions personal advisers, youth workers and sexual health advisers a key role in tackling prostitution through prevention, referrals and debt advice.

The Government is undertaking a four-month consultation on the proposals, which are designed to take a "holistic" look at prostitution. Measures to tackle drug use, pimping and trafficking are included, along with plans for diversion projects that delay court proceedings for under-18s.

But Home Office minister Caroline Flint, who launched the report, said decriminalizing prostitution for under-18s was not an option. "We don't want to send out a message to young people that it is OK to be a prostitute," she said.
