Briefing: Crib sheet - Prostitution strategy

2 mins read
The Government has produced a strategy that aims to tackle all types of prostitution, including the exploitation of children.

Why are we talking about prostitution? Because children become involvedin prostitution and that involvement counts as abuse when it concernsyoung people under 18. Also, discussions about how to tackleprostitution form part of the respect agenda. Adults are being givenfines or anti-social behaviour orders for soliciting and the Governmentwants to tackle the degenerative effects street prostitution can have onneighbourhoods. The Government has been considering how to respond toprostitution for quite a while now.

How does its prostitution strategy look? The strategy is theGovernment's response to the Paying the Price consultation that tookplace in July 2004.

It's strong on trying to deal with the causes, but weaker on safetyissues.
