Goals: To engage hard-to-reach young people in positive activities

Funding: Backers include New Deal for Communities, the Youth Justice Board, the Neighbourhood Support Fund and the European Social Fund

Friday nights can stretch endlessly for teenagers who have nothing to do. But a project run by the West Middlesbrough Youth Inclusion Project has taken local teenagers off the streets and engaged them in positive activities.

The Friday Night Group was formed after outreach workers from the youth inclusion project went out and spoke to groups of 13- to 16-year-olds in west Middlesbrough who had been identified as at risk of antisocial behaviour. Young people highlighted a lack of things to do on the Whinney Banks estate on Friday evenings, so the local youth club was opened from 7pm to 9pm around 18 months ago.
