What it is: Young People Rock the Dock, an event held as part of the Youth Challenge and Youth Achievement Awards, South Tyneside
Funding: £44,000 from the Children's Fund, which ends in March 2004
Goals: To engage 10- to 14-year-olds as well as older young people and to encourage them to develop personal skills.
Young people from South Tyneside recently organised Young People Rock the Dock, an appraisal night for the Children's Fund, held in partnership with South Tyneside Youth Support Service as part of the Youth Challenge and Youth Achievement Awards.
The awards require young people aged 11 to 14 and 14 to 20 to complete a minimum of six challenges over five hours. David Gonzalez, Youth Challenge project co-ordinator, said: "The awards are about recognising young people's talents, giving them a sense of achievement and encouraging them to make their own decisions. Also, because they are nationally accredited, the young people get a qualification they can actually use."
