Goals: Increase integration and understanding between young disabled and able-bodied people
Funding: 92,727 from the Big Lottery Fund's Young People's Fund for the next three years
Able-bodied and disabled young people will be able to learn to sail together as part of the new Splash Mates programme set up by Laburnum Boat Club based in Hackney, east London.
Laburnum Boat Club is a community boating scheme nestled next to the Regent's Canal in Hackney. It runs a youth club where members can canoe, go narrowboating and sail dinghies. It also runs separate sports classes for young people with disabilities.
The club, which received Big Lottery funding back in May, has now launched the Splash Mates scheme, where able-bodied young people will be trained to act as "buddies" for people aged nine to 21 with disabilities who are learning to canoe, narrowboat or sail.
