Social exclusion charity The People & Work Unit discovered a worrying trend when it researched the lives of young people from former mining areas in South Wales. While many with formal qualifications managed to find training and job placements, those without struggled to find meaningful, long-term employment.
Sarah Lloyd Jones, director of The People & Work Unit, says the research highlighted limited opportunities for certain groups. "Young people with no formal qualifications tended to drift from one low-paid job to another or find themselves unemployed," she says. "By the time they were 18, they would think they were too old to train."
