Preserving the past: Nursery wins heritage award

Nursery manager Alice Vine shows toddlers a heritage award presented for transforming a 148-year-old chapel into a state of the art nursery.

Day nursery group Early Years Childcare in Sussex invested more than800,000 to convert the St Francis Chapel in Southdowns Park,Haywards Heath. Original features such as ornate cornices and stainglass windows are integrated with a mezzanine floor and glass walls andjudges declared the project "a model for future conversions". Theproject was noticed by a local councillor and entered for the SussexHeritage Trust awards in the Public and Community category whichrecognises projects that benefit local people. "We're very proud of whatwe've achieved and delighted to be recognised in this way," said Vine.
