MPs on Parliament's Public Accounts Committee have criticised the government for failing to support schools and councils in the introduction of 14-19 diplomas.

The diplomas are the centrepiece of the government's reform of education for 14- to 19-year-olds and are being introduced over the next five years. However, the report says government support has been patchy and too focused on the areas launching diplomas this year. "Less well-advanced consortia will need increasing assistance to be able to offer diplomas in later years," says the report.

Support needed includes getting local employers involved, training teachers and making sure education facilities can cope with the qualifications. Without local employer backing the qualifications will fall flat, warns the report.
