I was interested to read the CYP Now 2010 Report, (7-11 January), especially since it was made up of views from those working in the profession, not just heading up major organisations in the sector, but also those on the frontline.

I believe that the answers to most problems lie with those who have to face them every day.

As the government's first ever minister for 14 to 19 reform and apprenticeships, it's my job to help all young people participate in education and training, building the skills they need for sustainable employment.

We entered the recession in a strong position, with record levels of participation in learning and long-term youth claimant unemployment virtually eradicated by the New Deal for Young People. And we are using it as an opportunity to raise young people's skill levels so that we emerge with a young, skilful and dynamic workforce.
