Politics: Mystery over huge offender payment

Phil Willis, the MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, is trying to establish why the out-of-court settlement was paid to a young person held at Northallerton Young Offender Institution in North Yorkshire.

He has lodged a request with Home Secretary John Reid.

"I want to know why the compensation was given," Willis told Young People Now. "Was it a result of negligence within the institution? If so has it been put right? Has this young person been seriously injured and if so, what were the nature of the injuries? It's a huge level of compensation, which is significant."

A Home Office spokesman said he could not comment on individual cases.
