Policy & Practice: Soapbox - The education bill isn't good enoughfor youth work

This appears to be the perverse response to the culmination of many years of active work by committed managers, workers and trade union members in the field to demonstrate the effectiveness and significant impact youth work has on young people's lives.

Academic studies and anecdotal sharing of good - and better - practice has shown that high-quality social educational youth work can and does make a huge positive impact on young people and their futures. We have tried on many occasions over the past few years to demonstrate to government ministers just what a vibrant service the youth service is and what more it could offer with sufficient funding and a statutory base. Transforming Youth Work - Resourcing Excellent Youth Services seemed to be a very good step in this direction - both in describing and endorsing youth work skills and values and in establishing a clear funding stream for youth work.
