How ironic that, in her Young People Now interview late last year (7-12 December, p14), Beverley Hughes' message to youth workers was: "Lift your sights for young people." From a youth work point, the disappointment is Youth Matters' patronising view of young people.

By defining teenagers as consumers, suggesting that they can simply buy their way out of boredom, the opportunity card sets the tone for the green paper. How will Ofsted react when it comes looking for evidence that the new children and young people's trusts are meeting youth work standards, only to find that what used to be the youth service has reverted to providing off-the-peg recreation?
