Policy & Practice: Soapbox - Youth work is key to the evolution ofchildren's trusts

Some local authorities are galloping ahead and others are going slowly, not to mention any lessons to be gained from the pathfinder authorities.

Managers of youth services have three options. They can do nothing in the hope that this agenda will disappear. They can do nothing, see how events unfold, and be directed to their future. Or they can become engaged fully in the realisation that this is one of the biggest potential opportunities for youth work in the past 20 years.

The latter is the most effective strategy. Youth work is about a holistic view of young people that emphasises the need for joined-up working. It is about a proven methodology for engaging with young people from a range of backgrounds, particularly the most disadvantaged. Youth work providers have a strong track record for providing programmes that enable young people to grow and develop. Other potential partners, who may well become part of children's trusts, have less recognised or less well developed skills and experience.
