The New Opportunities Fund, which distributes lottery money to health, education and environment projects, understands the barriers to healthy living faced by disadvantaged sections of the community. Its programmes are helping to tackle these barriers, for example, by supporting the development of sports facilities for schools and for wider community use, through the 750 million PE and sports programme.
Many young people do not get involved in sports activities because there are no local facilities or they cannot afford to use mainstream leisure services.
Through the fund's 300m Healthy Living Centre programme, a number of projects are tackling this issue head on: the Birmingham Wellbeing scheme is providing free basketball training and health awareness sessions, while the Fit for Football scheme in Humberside is running football coaching and health promotion sessions with local players.
