Increasingly, young people want to understand their roots and help establish their identities, whether it is finding out about local history or their family or cultural traditions. And it is not because teachers or decision-makers are telling them to, but because they are establishing their own understanding, their own views and their own perspectives.
The Heritage Lottery Fund, through its Young Roots grants scheme, is helping young people to access information that helps conserve and celebrate the cultural traditions, languages and local history that has shaped who they are.
In many cases, projects tap into the memories and past experiences of older members of the community, many of whom have little communication with the younger generation.
