Local history: A sporting heritage

The Heritage Lottery Fund is giving financial backing to several sports-related projects. Andy Hillier reports.

It is this passion that the Heritage Lottery Fund has been looking to tap into by providing funding for a number of youth projects that combine an interest in sport with opportunities to learn about local history.

In Wales and Leeds, young people have been learning about the legendary footballer John Charles as part of a touring exhibition. Charles was the Michael Owen of his day, who from humble beginnings went on to play for Leeds before moving to Juventus, where his goal-scoring exploits have gone down in Italian folklore.

But in an age before satellite TV and major sponsorship deals, the Swansea-born centre forward never experienced the trappings of the modern footballer.
