It is clear that developing children's leisure and play opportunities is a key way to achieve many of the Every Child Matters outcomes, such as being healthy, enjoying and achieving and making a positive contribution.

Several policy announcements have revealed the Government's commitmentto this issue. Recent initiatives include 500m of funding aimingto offer every child aged between five and 16 four hours of sport everyweek both in and out of school, and the Big Lottery Fund's 155mcommitment to its new strategic initiative for children's play.

For staff working within children's centres, extended schools and withtheir partners in the voluntary, independent and private sector therehas never been a better time to make leisure and play a valuable part oflocal support for children. The challenge is how to bring togethertraditionally separate sectors such as sport, culture and art,education, childcare and health into a cohesive offer.
