Policy & Practice: Judgment call - The dilemma

1 min read
The parents of a six-year-old boy, who they believe to be gifted, are concerned that his school and teachers are not offering him enough support and taking his educational needs seriously. A consultant at a support helpline for parents explains how she helped them to convince his school to take action.

While talking to two concerned parents it became clear that their sonwas gifted. He was easily bored at school, was finding the work too easyand his frustration was beginning to show through behaviouralproblems.

His parents wanted the school to recognise that action needed to betaken and an education plan better-suited to his capabilities put inplace.

However, this had fallen on deaf ears since the school, like someothers, has an ethos that does not single out pupils as gifted. Therewas also a general feeling from teachers that they were not qualified tohelp.

The problem is that parents often have to be the ones who drive anyattempt at change, and it can be hard and frustrating to keep calm asthey are so personally involved.
