Policy & Practice: Judgment call - The dilemma

1 min read
A nursery is concerned that a child who won't speak needs speech therapy, but the parents deny there is a problem. A nursery worker explains how she persuaded the parents that their child should have a hearing test.

We often have problems getting parents to admit that their children mayneed to see a speech therapist or have a hearing test. They find it hardto acknowledge that there might be a need for speech therapy and youhave to coax them into agreeing to it.

One time we had two siblings at the same nursery. One was fine, but thesecond one wasn't talking much and would point instead of speaking. Itmight have just been that the child was being stubborn or didn't want totalk, but this behaviour can mean that the child isn't hearing properlyor is having problems with speaking. It could also be that the child wasbeing lazy and is happy to let their sibling do the talking, but we needto ensure the child doesn't get overlooked as a result.
