A candidate for a job in a nursery performs exceptionally well at interview and is employed, but it soon becomes clear that her work and attitude are simply not good enough.

A nursery manager explains how she handled the situation and why she hasnow changed her recruitment procedures.

We're a new nursery and when we were setting up a young woman came in toask about job opportunities. She was lovely and we were pleased when wereceived a job application from her. It was very good, so she wasshort-listed for a relatively senior role. There was a lot of interestin the job but this girl gave an excellent interview and we offered itto her.

However, after only a few days it was clear we had made a mistake. I wasamazed at the difference between the girl we'd met and interviewed andthe girl who started work. When we first met she was enthusiastic,outgoing, and said all the right things, asking lots of questions abouttraining and career development. She had good experience andreferences.
