What should you do if your opinion is contrary to that of other professionals and their managers? Do you dig your heels in or can you achieve a compromise?

A therapist working in a CAMHS clinic tells what he did when his judgment was called into question.

We would all agree that providing quality services for children requires mutual co-operation and excellent communication between agencies. But what if the professionals disagree as to what is best?

Agencies and individuals can be competitive, with each wanting to express their opinion from their own expertise. I feel much the same and, in general, want to be heard and agreed with. Furthermore, I like to believe that I accept being challenged and can change my opinion when other ideas are put forward.

The disagreement in question involved a teenage girl who admitted to having had sex with a boy from her class. She had given consent but it was believed that he had coerced her into more than she agreed to.
