THE DILEMMA

- A teenager at a young offender institution is refusing to attendlessons due to bullying, despite the risk of having privileges takenaway.

- A prison officer explains how he eventually persuaded him toattend

A common problem we deal with is young lads refusing to attend educationclasses. Sometimes they haven't attended school for a number of yearsbefore they came to us so for them it is not something they see anybenefit in.

Sometimes, though, this refusal is for other reasons and one particularlad was refusing because he had been bullied at school and didn't wantthe same thing to happen again.

The problem is that unlike on the outside where they might be able toget away with it, there is no choice here and I have a duty to putanyone who refuses on report.
