THE DILEMMA

A sexually exploited young person repeatedly runs away and refuses toengage with services.

A Children's Society runaways development worker explains how shemanaged to share information with other professionals without alienatingthe girl.

I worked with one young person who went missing from her children's homeabout 80 times in one year. She was involved in sexual exploitation, grooming, alcohol and substance misuse. She was not involved with anyagencies and refused to speak to social workers or police. She was verymuch a loner and did whatever she wanted, even though she was living ina children's home.

The challenge was to build a relationship with this young person. I didthis, but I faced a dilemma. I needed to keep the relationship goingwhile disclosing some of the information she shared with me with otherprofessionals for her own safety. I also wanted to support her throughall the processes, such as child protection procedures.
