Parents claim a girl guide with a range of emotional and behaviouraldifficulties is "a bad influence" on their daughters and threaten towithdraw them from the guide group. A guide leader explains how shetackled the situation and supported the girl.
It can be hard working with troubled young people but often the mostdifficult thing is tackling the prejudice of others.
One example is an experience from my time as a girl guides leader. Itinvolved a 13-year-old girl who had emotional and behaviouralproblems.
She had a behaviour contract with social services and was allowed tocome to guides as part of that. The girl used to pull her hair out andwas very self-consciousness about the large bald patches she created. Tofit in with the older crowd she hung around with she would often drink, take drugs and have underage sex.
