The Dilemma: How do you handle a pupil coming to you for help with a family problem without making matters worse? A teacher tells of just such a case and explains how she dealt with the situation.

M approached me at the end of the day. I had only just qualified as a teacher and I was her form tutor. M told me she was very unhappy - she hated her stepmother and felt like she was being sidelined in the family in favour of her stepsister. She said she knew her Dad loved her but he didn't listen or understand.

I had to judge how to get involved in a family problem without making things worse. Over the next few days she came and talked to me at the end of each day. I didn't really offer her any advice but just gave her someone to talk to and help her to get her feelings out.
