What do you do when a young person on a residential activity course ignores health and safety advice, putting herself at risk? A youth worker explains how she handled such a situation.

One of the most difficult situations I have had to cope with as a youth worker occurred when I was accompanying 12 teenagers on a residential activity course.

One of the girls in my care was an 18-year-old. It was her third time on one of our residentials and previously she had been brilliant.

When we arrived the young people were very excited and giggly. We gave them their room numbers and time to settle in before tea. After tea the young people were exploring the building and rushing around when the girl took a nasty bang on the head.

Me and the other workers had to call for an ambulance as she was drifting in and out of consciousness. She was taken to hospital, but four hours later a youth worker had to go and pick her up.
