THE DILEMMA

How should child protection teams respond when they're confronted with domestic violence perpetrated by a woman? A senior duty and assessment practitioner fears that common assumptions could cloud judgments

During an investigation of a case that came to our attention because of neglect issues, it emerged that the mother involved had perpetrated violence against two male partners.

Both men knew each other quite well, but neither had been aware that the other had been a victim of violence. I was told there had been occasions when the children had witnessed violence. The children confirmed this.

Owing to a number of issues a case conference was convened. The domestic violence was highlighted at the meeting. Both men and the mother were present. During the meeting I observed that the men's behaviour was no different to that of women who have been abused.
