THE DILEMMA

A 17-year-old mother with a six-month-old baby refuses to make use ofhealth and play services.

A Sure Start outreach worker explains how listening to the girl led tothe creation of a service she was comfortable with.

Young people often feel out of place in parent groups. It's obviousthey're younger and they feel judged. One mum was adamant about this, a17-year-old who was very mature for her age.

We first met her in supported accommodation. She lived there because herfamily weren't able to support her. We'd known her for around six weekswhen she was given independent housing. At this point the only outsidesupport she had was from a support worker from the housingassociation.
