How can you ensure a young carer doesn't neglect her education when she's relied upon by those around her? A worker in a young carers' project in London has to balance a girl's needs with those of her family.

Young carers exist in families where there is no extended family support. Families are isolated and there is often more that one problem for the child to manage, where parents can have mental health issues combined with substance misuse. Often the families are not receiving any services and are not known to social services, and young carers are often "hidden" due to a fear that the authorities will take the child away.
