Although Brighton and Hove is dominated by the types of neighbourhood that tend to generate high numbers of admissions for asthma, it actually has fewer than expected. This is a likely result of its position between the sea and the South Downs, generating a better quality of air. The council housing to the east of Brighton enjoys a better environment than London or other large cities, where it would tend to be near busier roads and more factories. Asthma admissions are often linked to low levels of education about its causes, resulting in poor diet and lack of exercise.
