Sandwell is a large suburb in the West Midlands. The 60s-built council housing means tower block living is the norm for young White families, and horizons are low in terms of employment and education. With family structures breaking down, some girls see pregnancy and a flat of their own as an escape. But more often the causes of higher teenage pregnancy rates than expected are low levels of education about contraception and a wish to experiment at an early age. While abortion rates are relatively high, there are a significant number of young single families created each year.
