England is much further down the road in terms of providing for giftedand talented children than elsewhere in the UK.
In January, the Department for Education and Skills launched theNational Programme for Gifted and Talented Education. The programme aimsto improve the aspirations, motivation and self-esteem of giftedlearners, especially those at risk of underachieving, and those fromdisadvantaged backgrounds.
This summer, universities across England will offer up to 3,000 placeson residential, non-residential and online courses for gifted andtalented secondary school children, and more than 22,000 places duringthe next academic year. There are also guidelines for whole schoolpolicies on gifted and talented children.
SCOTLAND
Under the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act2004 local authorities are obliged to offer additional support to anychild or young person who needs it, including gifted children.
