Policy & Practice: Four nations - Child and adolescent mentalhealth services

The 300m child and adolescent mental health services receivedfrom the Government in 2002 has helped improve services.

In the three years after 2002, the number of children and young peopletreated rose by around a third. The most recent data shows just overhalf of patients wait for four weeks or less, though five per cent waitmore than six months. The workforce has also grown, meeting itsyear-on-year target increase of 10 per cent. Most areas say they havemet targets to extend services to 16- to 18-year-olds and to providearound-the-clock cover. However, services have been hit by NHS cuts andthere has been a 30 per cent reduction in inpatient beds since 1999,according to the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
