Oh dear, I'm confused. I think you'd better explain. We all know the Government wants to get more young people from working-class backgrounds into university. Currently, 50 per cent of young people from white-collar families go on to higher education, compared with 18 per cent of those from families in manual trades. The pressure is growing on universities to get their act together, with future funding linked to progress. One way they can do this is that when two candidates have the same qualifications, they give preference to the candidate from the state school over that from the independent school.
