Ah yes, the poor. Always with us, eh? Quite probably, but it doesn't stop us making an effort does it? This report from the House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee is an appraisal of how well the Government and we as a society are dealing with eradicating child poverty.
"Commons committee" - so it's independent of the Government? Seven of the 11 members are backbench Labour MPs, there are three Tories and it's chaired by Lib Dem MP Sir Archy Kirkwood. These committees take evidence in person and in writing from ministers, civil servants, local government chiefs and relevant voluntary organisations and lobby groups. They also go on not-jollies-at-all study visits to see how the rest of the world does things. This committee visited Paris and Copenhagen.
