Fill me in on the smoking ban. The timescale is that all enclosed government and NHS workplaces will be smoke-free by the end of 2006, and all other enclosed public spaces by the end of 2007, with the exception of licensed premises that prepare food, which have until the end of 2008.
Licensed premises that don't have food are allowed to carry on puffing.
What about Foyers and hostels? Good point - these places, along with other long-stay institutions, are people's homes as well as their work-places. The Government has been wriggling over how to balance freedoms and regulations and it is going to take a couple more years to think about what to do in these places.
