Briefing: Crib Sheet - Smokefree legislation

2 mins read
The Government has put out a new consultation on smoking in enclosed areas in an effort to protect people from passive smoking.

Have we got the balance right when it comes to smoking in enclosed places? The consensus response to a recent government consultation is, no we haven't. And as I peer through a fug of fetid "l'eau tobacco", I think I agree.

Another anti-smoking tyrant! The personal is political. But I'm also a pragmatist, and any changes that might lead to a reduction in the number of people of whatever age who smoke, as well as lower the likelihood that children can be poisoned by passive smoking, have to be real and realisable.

And what's going to lead to this public health revolution then? Well, they've tried banning advertising, increasing taxation, public health campaigns, smoking cessation programmes, voluntary smokefree zones, issuing penalty fines, and a touch of public disapproval. The latest offering from Government is another attempt to consult - though this time it's about changing the law in England and Wales. Scotland is in the midst of implementing similar regulations.
