Health information? That's a bit dry. How can we improve public healthif we have no way of delivering health information and intelligence? Theidea behind the development of this new health strategy is that betterinformation should mean more effective commissioning of services, valuefor money, and a spotlight on specific issues that lead to ill health inthe wider population. And the Government wants to know whether we agreewith its plans.
But we collect so much information we can't keep track of it. That maybe the case but we don't bring it together, and there are gaps. Forinstance, we lack data on smoking rates, or child height and weightespecially at a ward, neighbourhood, or even individual school level. How high are road traffic accidents in a housing estate for example, andcan traffic calming measures be put in place to prevent furtheraccidents?
