Why do we need this then? Voluntary groups need to co-operate for many reasons. The mania for joined-up approaches reaches out from government and into the voluntary sector too. Many funders also make partnership working a condition. With more and more opportunities likely to arise for the voluntary sector to take on work from the public sector, working together is set to become more widespread, and this report is a start at providing some good practice guidance.
This applies to youth work as well? Certainly we can expect the youth green paper, should it come it pass, to contain opportunities for more partnership working. Youth and community work grandee Tony Jeffs recently told delegates at a conference for detached workers that larger organisations would be "salivating" at the prospect of picking up work, but added that "freedom for the pike is a death sentence for the minnow". Guidance in getting co-operation right is especially important for smaller organisations that want to protect their identity.
