Speaking at the party's conference in Blackpool, Oaten said he had beenimpressed by the variety of volunteering opportunities available toGerman teenagers who don't wish to do national service. He said thatencouraging British 16-year-olds to do a month's voluntary work couldhelp steer them away from crime.
Oaten also used the YMCA and Children's Society-organised meeting at theconference to criticise the Government's anti-social behaviourpolicies.
"The idea that respect can somehow be fostered by a set of principlesincluding having a respect taskforce or, heavens above, a respect tzaris nonsense," he said.
