Lib Dems elect youth service advocate

The Liberal Democrat party has elected a leader with a strong track record of support for youth.

Nick Clegg worked on the party's Crime Policy Working Group, which expressed concern that government policies are criminalising young people.

It also called for a dedicated youth officer with youth work training to be established within all safer neighbourhood teams.

Clegg is understood to be supporter of youth work, and the need for improved services for young people generally.

In his acceptance speech he talked about the importance of giving politics back to the people.

"I want to live in a country where rights, freedoms and privacy are not the playthings of politicians, but safeguarded for everyone," he said.

"Where parents, pupils and patients are in charge of our schools and hospitals."
