1 min read Education
Children in deprived rural areas need extra help so they do not fall behind at school, the Liberal Democrats' children's spokesman has said.

Speaking at the party's annual conference in Bournemouth, David Lawssaid current government policy meant disadvantaged young people in ruralareas were hidden behind the misconception that life is easier in"leafy" areas.

"It's simply too often seen by government that deprivation meanssomething that happens in an urban environment," Laws told an event runby the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL). "Yet, we know a hugeamount of young people are living in deprivation in rural areas. Theassumption is that in deprived rural areas everything is a bit morecomfortable than in urban areas."

Laws claimed the Liberal Democrats' pupil premium proposal would helpyoung people living in isolated disadvantaged communities. The proposalwould see extra cash follow disadvantaged young people throughout theirschool career.
