As bullying hits the headlines again, some schools are helping children to put a stop to it themselves. Amanda Leishenring and Janice Gunnell reveal their peer support programme.

Moving to secondary school can be a frightening time for children and is often coupled with a fear of bullying. Because we're grassroots workers in health and education, we've seen this upset at first hand, with a Year 7 child crying at the gates of the local high school every morning with her mother, terrified by the stories she'd heard about bullying.

Since we both have an understanding of how to engage with young people and other agencies while working within the school system, in December 2003 we decided to tackle this issue. We came up with a partnership that would empower young people to support each other and feel safer in high school, following their transition from primary school.
