Participation: Young people win vote for skatepark

1 min read
Young goths, townies and youth council members in Brampton, Cambridgeshire, have successfully teamed up to persuade local people to support the building of a skatepark in a town-wide referendum.

Despite opposition from 192 residents, more than 1,200 backed the construction of a skatepark after intensive campaigning by young people.

The success is the culmination of a three-year participation project run by Cambridgeshire Youth Service and supported by The Prince's Trust.

Although Brampton Parish Council had identified land for the skate-park, the referendum was called after local objections.

Steph Webb, senior youth worker at the youth service, said: "This is the first time the town has had a referendum and it's been a great achievement for young people.

"We have been working with the young people on projects to break down barriers between them, and one thing they all agreed on was a skatepark."

Eight out of ten of those who voted were in favour of the skatepark.

Webb said the victory was down to the young people treating the referendum like a political campaign. "They canvassed each house in the town three times, held open evenings and put up posters," she said.

Construction of the 90,000 skatepark is now under way.
