Youth facilities: Skatepark planned for Whitley Bay

Contractors have begun work on a new skatepark in Whitley Bay.

The new facility, which will be situated on the site of the former Panama Cafe, will form a key part of North Tyneside Council's £60m regeneration plans for the town.

The skatepark has been designed in consultation with local skateboarders, BMX users and rollerbladers, and when finished will provide a 1,000 square metre skating area.

Dan Pietruszka, a young skater from North Shields, said: "It will be fantastic to have something locally. Young people currently have to travel to South Shields or Newcastle."
