Participation: Young people ask for more respect

More than two-fifths of young people feel that they do not get enough respect from adults. A survey by England's children's commissioner of more than 2,000 11- to 16-year-olds revealed that young people feel they do not have enough say in decisions that affect them.

In response to the findings, the commissioner has launched anEngland-wide campaign to encourage children to express their views.

The Shout! Turn Up The Volume campaign is focused on a web-basedcompetition where young people send in artwork expressing their views. The web site also gives children a chance to give their views on anysubject.

The views will help the commissioner decide his future priorities. Thecompetition winners will get the chance to help create the Office of theChildren's Commissioner's new brand identity. Children's commissioner AlAynsley-Green said the campaign would put "children at the very heart ofour organisation".
