Participation: Young learn from mock elections

The Y-Vote Mock Local Elections, organised by youth organisations and schools in the run-up to the local polls on May 4, follow the mock elections for under-18s held last year to coincide with the general election.

From next year, an annual mock election day will be set, to enable young people to take part whether a real election is taking place in their area or not.

Beccy Earnshaw, participation manager for The Electoral Commission, which is supporting the Hansard Society scheme, said: "Instead of something that's just run at election time, we want the mock elections to be something that young people can do every year."
