The Action Research project, a scheme run by the Birmingham Association of Youth Clubs, secured the money from the Big Lottery Fund's research fund. The cash will be used to teach young people research skills so they can investigate subjects that interest them.
Peter Miller, the association's chief executive, said that too often participation is about getting young people's views through systems that adults have put in place. "What we are trying to do is come at it from the opposite end," he said.
The Big Lottery Fund has also given research funds to Scottish charity Children 1st to examine issues affecting young fathers; the Anna Freud Centre, which will look at ways of reducing adoption breakdowns; and the Mental Health Foundation, which is investigating problems faced by young people with learning difficulties.
